JET - SWG3 06/10/2024

Cheers for the memories!

Jet returned to Glasgow last week at SWG3, bringing their iconic indie rock sound and rolling back the years for fans who remember the heyday of 2004. It's been 21 years since their debut album Get Born hit the shelves, and the Glasgow indie scene was out in force, reliving memories of '1 pints at Fury Murry's and the infamous after-parties at Barfly.

Hailing from Melbourne, Jet arrived with their high-energy rock anthems. As the first few notes of "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" rang out, the crunching guitar lines and massive riffs set the tone for the night.

New single 'Hurry Hurry' had the SWG3 crowd rolling back the years with its infectious hooky chorus, it was then time for the debut album Get Born to be played in full, which took everyone on a nostalgic journey.

I used to work for Subcity Radio, at Glasgow University, and I remember getting the radio advance copy of "Are You Gonna Be My Girl." A few nights later I was dancing to tunes in an Indie nightclub in Greenock, and couldnt believe it when I head the DJ play the song - we wee the only 2 people in the room who had heard it - we were both like "this is going to be MASSIVE." As it turned out, the 2nd track on Get Born became a timeless classic and everyone knows it now! So understandably the crowd collectively danced to that famous bassline!

The anthem "Rollover DJ" had the audience clapping along to the deep Purple-esque riffs, delivering pure rock energy, and "Look What Youve Done" transformed into a massive singalong, the crowd taking over every lyric.

As they powered through tracks like "Get Me Outta Here" and the AC/DC-flavoured "Cold Hard Bitch", it was clear Jet's anthemic rock still resonates with Glasgow's music lovers. The band expressed their gratitude, thanking fans for sticking by them over the last 21 years, even though "We havent done very much!" When they mentioned heading south to England next, they were, of course, met with some good-natured Glasgow boos.

After the show, the night ended with an after-party meet-and-greet, where Jet mingled with family and friends alike - I was glad to be invited in for a chat!

It was a surreal sight to see frontman Nic Cester holding up a Motherwell FC shirt, a switch-up from the Celtic green I would expect! It capped off a memorable night of anthems, riffs, and plenty of love for Jet from the Glasgow crowd.

Cheers for the memories!
