Glasgowmusic newsletter 050410-110410

Hows things?

A busy weekend just passed there. I saw some great acts at Hinterland Festival. Anyone go? What did you think?

I was recently on a radio panel for Eddie Gemmell’s Solutions Show. You can listen to the debate at the media player at the bottom of the page. www.yrock.co.uk

I have a new DJ night at the Brass Monkey that will feature new music from Glasgow and beyond. Loads of news Scottish artists will be featured alongside new music and other great tunes I like. It kicks off at 8pm. I also have my Friday night residency in the same venue playing classic rock& roll and indie.

I have now got a team of reviewers out and about in the venues of Glasgow and on their Stereos reviewing your music. If you have a gig/EP, upcoming single wanting a review please get in touch and I will see who is available. Also if you are keen on writing reviews please get in touch to register your interest.

I am looking for some Event Management work at the moment, if you have anything at your venue/festival or looking for a tour manager please get in touch to see if I can help out.

***If you have any news stories/giveaways/etc you would like added to next weeks newsletter please email them to (also feedback on the newsletter is much appreciated!) [email protected] Please mention if you saw anything in the newsletter please

I am hopefully going to be switching over to a new mailing list format soon; you can sign up for that one here  www.glasgowmusic.co.uk/mailinglist.html

In the News
Tomorrow’s orchestral musicians will join today’s best young jazz talent in Glasgow next week. The NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRAS of Scotland are delighted to present two of its young ensembles in a varied evening of classical music and free spirited jazz. The concert, taking place at The Royal Concert Hall on 12 April, sees almost 150 of Scotland’s best young musicians take to the stage. In the first half, Conductor John Grant, a former NYOS musician, leads The National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland in a programme of challenging and varied music including Smetana’s Vlatava from Ma Vlast, Shotakovitch’s and Tchaikovsky’s Finale from Symphony No 2.
GLASVEGAS have announced that their drummer has left the band www.glasvegas.net

SONNY MARVELLO have announced that they are playing a live music showcase later this month which will be recorded for Sky TV: www.myspace.com/sonnymarvello The band recently had one of their songs mastered at Abbey road Studios and have been very vocal in support of a local community centre in Castlemilk where they practice and record.
Stephen Farrell, singer and songwriter in the band, said: “We still use the Youth Centre for jamming and rehearsals. Castlemilk might not have the best reputation in Glasgow, but there are facilities and options for kids. There has been a lot of press in Scotland recently about kids not having places to go or things to do, so they turn to drink and drugs. But I think you’ll find that most areas have youth groups or sports facilities. Kids should be told about them in school and taught about the benefits and opportunities available to them.”

German disco-king MALENTE will be appearing at OCouture club this friday
His recent release “I Like It” was signed up by A-Trak’s Fools Gold label and has featured on the playlists of Fake Blood, Crookers, Steve Aoki and Tiga.

Finally

‘BATTLE FOR 2ND PLACE,’ a new Glasgow band, held an egg and spoon race in George Square, Glasgow to celebrate the launch of their campaign to become the world’s second best band. The event was organised on facebook and promoted at the bands gigs. Contestants had to run through George Square at 1pm on Good Friday afternoon with an egg and spoon.
The idea of the race was not to win but come in second place. All of the participants who raced were instructed to run the second half of the race in slow motion to make sure that no one was a clear winner. The slow motion race through a busy George Square attracted quite a bit of attention and was photographed and filmed by tourist and locals alike.
The assembled crowd and race participants were awarded with silver medals and an impromptu gig by the band that played songs form their double B-side debut single B1: A Better Chance B2: Damage
When asked about the reason for the unusual event Battle for 2nd Place singer Orla commented, ‘’we’ll never compete with the big PR machines that power the X-factor and other mainstream artists so we decided to get creative and try something different to get noticed. We were blown away by the response from the people of Glasgow.’’
Brian Payne from the band commented on the origins of the band’s name, ‘’our plan is not to compete with the big mainstream No 1 artists, our plan is go for number 2 but we are not the only people doing that. There are so many talented independent bands in the world which means it really is a Battle for 2nd Place.’’
When asked about the bands future plans for their campaign Orla commented, ‘’there will be more events popping up in different locations on the run up to the single launch on July 2nd 2010 just watch our website for details” www.myspace.com/tbfsp

Best Wishes
