Hello, how’s things?

Thanks very much for all the interest in the Oxjam Festival. I have stopped taking submissions for band and myself and the Oxjam team will be announcing the lineup in the coming week.

Also a reminder that I will be starting to DJ at the Ivory hotel in Shawlands as of August 28th. I will be Djing from 9-12, there will be loads of drinks promos and also soon to be announced entertainment that will run from October IM AM INTERESTED IN HEARING OF COVER ACTS/ACOUSTIC/STRIPPED DOWN ACTS – Things a little bit different and interesting and with own PA for Saturday night entertainment. If you could add this night to your listings/diaries, weekly Saturdays it would be appreciated.

I was involved in a Music Seminar in Dunfermline with various music industry professionals offering advice to assembled bands and promoters on Monday just passed. It was a great night. Thanks to Calum from Weekend Revolution for putting it on. I am hoping to be doing more of these in the coming months.

MA Music: Innovation & Entrepreneurship

This ground-breaking MA is the first of its kind in the UK, and aims to address music both culturally and commercially within the context of innovative and creative thinking in direct relation to entrepreneurship.

It aims to produce highly-focused individuals immersed in the realities and practicalities of the emerging 21st century music business models. Developing the capacity to ‘think different’ is at the very heart of the programme.

Traditional modes of thought in relation to many aspects of the music sector are obsolete and larger, institutional processes have been superseded by more technologically democratic ways of conducting business. The rise of the ‘new artist model’ which places emphasis upon commercial autonomy by artists and managers within the music sector has also created the need for the development of a new music business skillset.

This programme is at the leading edge of postgraduate activity in music and enjoys extensive backing from major figures within the UK music sector. Involvement of high-level practitioners from the creative industries and entrepreneurship in the delivery of the course will ensure that it provides students with an unsurpassed ‘real-world’ focus.

While the programme is ideally suited to artist entrepreneurs who wish to set up their own record labels, management or publishing companies, it seeks to further develop music-related business ideas that may span everything from ‘apps’ to hotels to the visual arts and beyond. The crucial distinction is ‘working with music’ rather than ‘working in the music industry’.

It is aimed at those who have an undergraduate qualification or prior experience in music, the performing arts, art and graphic design, media, film, business or any of the creative industries; however it is not confined to these backgrounds. Although the focus of the programme is music, it is contextualised by the awareness of the phenomenal ‘reach’ and cachet of music within the creative industries and the extent to which music enhances all media platforms both aesthetically and commercially. Similarly, implicit in study at Masters level is development of the ability to see beyond the confines of professional practice and to develop a critical perspective, personally and in one’s own working practices.

The programme is delivered mainly at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in the centre of Glasgow, where the University’s School of Creative & Cultural Industries has a hub and also at Film City. Delivery of some programme options will also be offered at the University’s Ayr and Paisley campuses.

The development of a critical understanding of these domains will enable students to participate in a project-based Innovative Enterprise module which comprises the final third of the MA and takes the form of a ‘live’ business proposition within the current music business environment. For this project students will have the support of academic and industry mentors.

Overall the programme aspires to students developing commercially robust, music-related products, services or processes over the duration of the programme; at all times, students will be gaining the mindset and the skillset to do so successfully in the future.
