www.glasgowmusic.co.uk is proud to present the first of a series of events at the Falkirk Wheel. On Saturday 30th October, The Wheel will play host to an event never before seen at this amazing structure.
Local band The Ray Summers will play a hometown show to mark the launch of this new festival on the basin of the Forth and Clyde Canal.
Lead guitarist Dougie from the band commented “Weve not played a big show in Falkirk for absolute ages so when we heard that a big event was being organised at The Falkirk Wheel we were delighted to be asked to play. Weve played all over the country but nowhere quite like The Falkirk Wheel. Were sure it will turn out to be a really cool place to do a gig. Quite fancy playing a wee acoustic show on the Wheel itself!”
The band have been busy recording their debut album in Monomen Studios in Fife and are looking forward to playing the new tunes to their hometown crowd.
“Weve been in the studio for the past few months so it will be nice to come home and play the album in front of our Falkirk fans. Looking to get the album polished off pretty soon. Im sure well do a tour and have a few more exciting projects to announce!”
As the gig is very close to Halloween fancy dress is more than encouraged.

THE RAY SUMMERS
Biography
The Ray Summers are a Scottish six-piece who formed in 2008 and bonded over a shared love of harmony, melody and, most importantly, making people dance!
The boys have since gained a reputation as a raucous live act who’ve added a much needed splash of colour to the Scottish music scene. They have subsequently caused waves at festivals such as Rockness, T in the Park, Glasgow’s Hogmanay and The Camden Crawl leading to a number of support slots with established acts including Alabama 3, Alphabeat, The Bluetones, The Charlatans, Doves, Idlewild and Paolo Nutini.
"Over the past 12 months they’ve amassed a growing fanbase thanks to thrill-packed tracks like Crazy World or The Shepherd and a brilliant live show that’s guaranteed to leave you wearing a grin.” – News of The World, 9 for 2009
Their influences are taken from a number of genres, which have impacted on their song writing. The boys draw inspiration from the likes of Love, The Coral, The Bees and The Super Furry Animals and expertly combine them with the bands own tongue-in-cheek sense of humour.
The bands debut single ‘The Shepherd’, broke into the Scottish top 10 charting above Beyonce!
The band will be releasing their debut album at the end of this year and this hometown show is to celebrate the end of the recording of the album
Press Reviews
News Of The World
“Imagine the Hamburg-era Beatles jamming with Booker T and the MGs and you won’t be too far away from that blazing sixties vibe they conjure up…more fun than Katy Perry and Britney Spears in a pillow fight.” 5 Stars
Daily Record
“Buzzband of the moment, The Ray Summers lit up the underground Edinburgh with a performance fir for a main stage festival slot… the talented group successfully mix Indie, Ska and Soul to create a unique and upbeat sound… Imagine big sounds, blue skies, beer and good times.”
The Skinny
“The Ray Summers channel everyone from Ram Jam, via the Specials, the Small Faces and latterly, even the Coral. Extremely good fun”
The Scotsman
“In terms of connecting with the huddled masses, unsigned Falkirk rookies The Ray Summers, plucked to open the (Glasgow Hogmanay Paolo Nutini) gig by public vote, rather stole his thunder. Singer Andy Ure has a Gruff Rhys-like presence and songs like The Shepherd are damnably catchy”
is this Music?
“They are the true definition of the term “indie”. It means unique, self sufficient, independent of common sound. While so many bands are trying for tragic/romantic echoes of emotion, these guys are playing music of a past time which gets inside your bones. You honestly can’t stop your body from moving to it.
Hearing their music live is a hurricane of sound. Stepping into the auditorium it’s as though I had been transported to an old French colonial dance hall in New Orleans. In fact I think that’s where they should go next. The Howlin’ Wolf in New Orleans, and I would go and see them.”
We All Want Someone To Shout For
“Woah where did The Ray Summers come from? After hearing two of the Scottish bands songs,I am greatly impressed. They have a little bit of The Coral in them, with a little more festive energy. Their songs are a shit-ton of fun. I can only imagine how crazy their live shows are. If they ever come to NYC, I’m there.”
THE FALKIRK WHEEL
The Millennium Link was an ambitious £84.5m project with the objective of restoring navigability across Scotland on the historic Forth & Clyde Canal and Union Canal, providing a corridor of regenerative activity through central Scotland.
A major challenge faced, was to link the Forth and Clyde Canal, which lay 35m (115ft) below the level of the Union Canal. Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these has been dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.
What was required was a method of connecting these two canals by way of a boat lift. British Waterways were keen to present a visionary solution taking full advantage of the opportunity to create a truly spectacular and fitting structure that would suitably commemorate the Millennium and act as an iconic symbol for years to come.
The resultant, perfectly balanced structure that is The Falkirk Wheel – the world’s first and only rotating boat lift – was the eventual outcome of British Waterways collaboration with a design team that combined international experience of joint venture contractor Morrison-Bachy-Soletanche with leading specialists from Ove Arup Consultants, Butterley Engineering and Scotland-based RMJM architects.
Completion of The Millennium Link project was officially marked by Her Majesty The Queen on 24 May 2002 at The Falkirk Wheel.
