Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) 2013 nominees to open Refugee Week Scotland

Three bands shortlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year award are set to perform at this year’s Refugee Week Scotland opening concert.

The line-up for the gig at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow includes some of the top names in Scottish music, including three Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) award nominees.

Headline act and Glasgow ensemble Admiral Fallow are shortlisted for their album ‘Tree Bursts in Snow’. They will be joined by award-winning folk singer Karine Polwart, whose album ‘Traces’ has been nominated for the SAY award. One-time Arab Strap guitarist Malcolm Middleton, shortlisted for his ‘Human Don’t Be Angry’ album, opens with songs from his solo catalogue.

The concert marks the beginning of a week-long programme of events. Running from June 17-23, Refugee Week Scotland is part of a UK-wide arts and cultural festival that celebrates the unique skills and talents refugees from around the world bring to Scotland.

This year’s programme – co-ordinated by Scottish Refugee Council and packed with music, comedy, theatre, literature, community celebrations and more – has plenty of big names attached.

Suzi Simpson, Arts and Cultural Development Officer at Scottish Refugee Council said: “We are delighted to have such brilliant acts lined up for our opening concert. The gig at the Old Fruitmarket is just one of over 100 events happening across the country during this year’s Refugee Week Scotland. Refugee Week celebrates the contribution refugees make to life in Scotland but it is open to everyone. Anyone can join in, whether that’s by organising a unique community celebration, taking part in a workshop or simply attending one of our professional theatre, music or arts events. Refugee Week Scotland is a festival for everyone in.”

Funds raised through the concert will go to Scottish Refugee Council and British Red Cross to support our work with refugees in Scotland.

Mon 17 June, 8pm, Old Fruitmarket, Candleriggs, Glasgow, G1 1NQ, Standing. Ages 16+, £16 (£13 balcony only)
