CLUTHA BENEFIT @ BREAD & ROSES, 25 January (from 7pm)

We were all saddened by the tragic helicopter crash at the Clutha Bar in Glasgow on 29 November, which resulted in ten deaths and numerous injuries. As this is a bar with strong trade union links, the venue is known well to many of us and here we feel obliged to take the opportunity to show sympathy and solidarity by staging this event to raise money for the Clutha Appeal Fund, set up by Glasgow City Council for the families of the bereaved and injured.

An evening of music is headed by our own SEAN TAYLOR, the much-acclaimed singer-songwriter whose latest album Chase the Night – recorded in Austin, Texas – has been receiving rave reviews.

Also appearing are THE REVELATORS, fronted by Frank Bogie, a frequent performer at the Clutha and who used to organise the KaMel Club upstairs in the B&R, and featuring percussionist Dougie MacDonald;

THAT RETRO SCENE, an up-and-coming young indie band who appeared at Glastonbury 2013 and include our own Joe Smith, and Tom Currie, son of Billy of Ultravox fame;

Talented singer-songwriter MARK COPELAND, recently arrived from Glasgow (he’s played the Clutha), but here long enough to have penned a song entitled Brixton Lights

THE SHIP MATES, a gathering of trad Irish musicians (playing on Tuesday nights at the eponymous Ship in Wandsworth), convened by Brian Kelly, banjo virtuoso formerly with Shane MacGowan’s Popes and now with festival favourites The Long Notes.

Oh, and host John McDonnell will have a musical surprise for us as well. And possibly more bands may be added, too.


Currently on sale in the bar is the Clutha Sessions, a ten-track CD featuring seven of the bar’s regular bands including Esperanza, who were playing when the tragedy struck. It’s only a fiver, and all proceeds will also go to the Clutha Appeal Fund.
