Scottish cult-pop raconteur Aidan Moffat and award-winning film-maker Paul Fegan spent this Spring touring the length and breadth of Scotland – socialising with local characters, carousing into the early hours, and exploring the countrys music traditions as part of their unprecedented folkloric pop voyage, Where Youre Meant To Be.
The footage shot along the way is set to become an irreverent and entertaining feature-length film, directed by Fegan, which will include yarns and songs from local characters, Nessie-hunting, mediaeval sword-fighting, cattle-swimming, peace protesting – and Moffats performances of a terrific new folk-inspired body of work, backed by James Graham (The Twilight Sad), Jenny Reeve (Bdy_Prts) and Stevie Jones (El Hombre Trajeado). The film, which is due for completion later this year, will also pay homage to some of our most resonant spaces, from Faslane Peace Camp to Lerags kirkyard.
In the meantime, true to the projects adventurous, social spirit – and its blend of live music, oral traditions and film – Moffat and Fegan will transform Glasgows Barrowland Ballroom into a cabaret-style cinema venue on Sunday August 31, for a one-off preview screening of several key scenes from their forthcoming film. These will be interspersed with songs from Moffat, and his tales about the characters and anecdotes behind each clip – along with live turns from special guests who play key roles, including championship bothy balladeers Joe Aitken and Geordie Murison, and trad-folk favourite Danny Couper.
The evening promises a truly unique and engaging insight into the scenes, stories, people and places at the heart of Where Youre Meant To Be. Very limited free tickets for this one-off event will be available through Aidan Moffats Twitter feed (@aidanjohnmoffat) as of tomorrow morning (15/8). The project is part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme, and this preview takes place on the last day of Glasgow 2014
