Pete Doherty - SWG3 18/04/2023

A Night of Nostalgia and Chaos

Pete Doherty, the enigmatic frontman of The Libertines and Babyshambles, brought his raw charisma and storied music to SWG3 in Glasgow last night. With a career spanning decades, Dohertys influence on the indie rock scene is undeniable, and his live performances continue to captivate audiences with their blend of chaos and brilliance.

The evening began with Doherty playing alongside his support on stage, taking the audience on a journey through the history of his music. Starting with "Albion," he shared anecdotes about where it all began, including a heartfelt story of meeting Carl Bar't and the formation of The Libertines. This chronological storytelling through songs like "The Good Old Days" and "Music When the Lights Go Out" provided a nostalgic trip for long-time fans.

As Doherty moved from "Bollywood to Battersea," he made a humorous reference to the Glasgow band Kain, admitting, "can't remember what they sounded like though they had ace leather jackets." The crowd, packed with Babyshambles devotees, was rowdy and enthusiastic, adding to the electric atmosphere of the night.

"I Get Along" was delivered with a raucous energy reminiscent of Chas and Dave if they were backed by a Cossack band, a chaotic synergy Doherty credited to the producers intervention. "Death on the Stairs" evoked memories of Glasgows own spirited music scene.

By the time he reached "The Ha Ha Wall" and "Gunga Din," the structured storytelling gave way to a free-for-all of hits. "Sheepskin Tearaway" and "What Katie Did" followed, with the crowd singing along fervently.

"Horrorshow" and "Boys in the Band" continued the hit parade, building up to the climactic "What a Waster." This song was almost prophetic, as a scene unfolded before Doherty's eyes'someone stumbling about while a bouncer ejected another fan. The repeated refrain of "What a waster" seemed to capture the moment perfectly.

Adding to the night's unpredictability, Pete's dogs made an impromptu appearance on stage, running around and bringing a touch of endearing chaos to the performance. This unplanned cameo was met with cheers and laughter, showcasing Doherty's knack for turning any situation into part of the show.

The night closed with the anthems "Time for Heroes" and "Can't Stand Me Now," solidifying the concert as a celebration of Doherty's legacy. His performance at SWG3 was a testament to his enduring appeal and the unfiltered authenticity he brings to every stage. It was a night of nostalgia, storytelling, and pure rock 'n' roll spirit, leaving Glasgow fans buzzing with excitement long after the final note.
