Tom Vek - SWG3 - 10/10/2024

Tom Vek's music still holds that magic.

Its been 20 years since Tom Vek first emerged from the UK's indie-electronic scene, a time when bands like Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also carving their own niches. Vek, though, has always danced to the beat of his own drum - a distinctive mix of driving bass, angular riffs, and crisp electronics. Last nights performance at The Poetry Club in Glasgow felt like a reunion with an old friend, one whose music has soundtracked countless indie discos across the country. But this time, it was more intimate, more immediate.

I first met Tom Vek when he played King Tut's Wah Wah Hut back in the mid-2000s. We sat down for what was supposed to be an interview, but it turned into two guys sharing beers, talking music, and life. Since then, I've followed a career in the music industry, while Vek became a fixture of club nights, his tracks lighting up sticky dancefloors from Glasgow to London.

Last night's show wasn't a nostalgia trip per se, but there was a palpable sense of time passed. The Poetry Club, with its low ceiling and cozy vibe, was the perfect setting for this intimate gig. I found myself standing on the stairs, trying to catch a glimpse of Vek through the sea of heads bobbing along to the pulsating beats. The performance felt almost like a DJ set, with Vek deftly blending his live tracks into one seamless experience that kept everyone moving.

He opened with the kind of driving basslines that remind you why he's been compared to his peers like Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem. There's a raw energy to his live performances, where pounding drums collide with synth-driven melodies. Tracks like Nothing But Green Lights are pure anthems. As soon as that unmistakable hook kicked in, the room was electrified. It's impossible not to get swept up by its infectious energy.

One of the highlights of the night was I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes. The riff instantly took me back to those indie club nights in the mid-2000s, back when ripped jeans, Adidas trainers, and a drink in hand were the uniform of choice. The floor might have been less sticky this time, but the vibe was the same'a room full of people losing themselves to music.

It's been nearly two decades since Tom Vek first burst onto the scene, and while the venues might have changed, the power of his music hasn't. Last night's show at The Poetry Club felt like a celebration of a career that's always been about more than just following trends'its about staying true to a sound that gets people moving, whether it's in a packed indie club or an intimate venue on a rainy night in Glasgow. And, judging by the energy in the room, Tom Vek's music still holds that magic.
