Sir Tom Jones brought his "Defy Explanation" tour to Dundee, with the legendary Welshman quickly overcoming an upper respiratory tract infection which saw a German date get postponed, to headline the Discovery Festival, everyone in Dundee was psyched.
After support from King King and Ward Thomas, he came on stage to a rapturous welcome, kicking off his setlist with Bobby Cole's "I'm Growing Old", which made everyone in the audience sentimental for obvious reasons, this followed with Leonard Cohen's Tower Of Song and a cover of Bob Dylans "Not Dark Yet".
The crowd came alive as the hits followed, "Its Not Unusual," "Whats New Pussycat?", and "Sexbomb" had the Slessor Gardens faithful singing along to every word, many of the older attendees reliving cherished memories while new fans discovering the magic for the first time. His rendition of "Delilah" was also a powerful moment, resonating deeply with the spectators.
Tom also treated the attendees to gems like Randy Newmans "You Can Leave Your Hat On," Bob Dylans "One More Cup of Coffee," and Noel Harrisons "The Windmill of Your Mind,", interpreting diverse material with his unique feel. The energy throughout the evening was all there to see, a testament to Joness undiminished stage presence and vocal prowess.
Did I also mention that Tom Jones is 85 years old?, older than other icons from the British Invasion era like Paul McCartney, Lulu and Mick Jagger.
Princes "Kiss" was performed before an encore occurred, with Sir Tom returning to conclude the gig with "One Hell Of A Life", making the audience sentimental once more because he sure has had one hell of a life, cementing his place in music history with his hits and his famous collaborations with the late greats, Janis Joplin and Elvis Presley.
Tom finished the set with Strange Things Happening Every Day, bidding his farewell to a jubilant crowd.
Even at 85, Sir Tom is showing no sign of slowing down, full of energy, determination and continuing to blow audiences away with his breath-taking singing talent, Sir Tom nailed it on the night despite falling ill days before the show. There is absolutely no doubt that he will continue to tour in years to come.
