And well... it’s "Words" to start! Wow! My absolute favourite song, and what a way to get a Thursday night at the Barras properly started. Hearing those opening chords ring out across the room sent an immediate surge through the crowd.
Of course, there was a bit of talk in the room about Jimi Goodwin taking a backseat from touring to focus on his health and wellbeing, but the rest of the band—along with the touring musician who stepped up to fill those massive shoes—handled it with total class. The spirit of the band was fully intact, and the crowd rallied behind them from the second they walked out.
About 30 minutes in, Doves hit that stride they are famous for, launching into those crazy, sprawling jams that only they can pull off. They have you completely hooked. It started building up and up—taking a roaring guitar and a prog-rock lion of a groove and morphing it into a full-on dance track, all played live by a showcase indie band at the absolute peak of their powers.
A special shoutout has to go to Andy Williams on the drums. Between singing lead and giving out heartfelt dedications to various girls in the audience, he was on absolute top form. Then came a moment of pure gold: as he was mid-track banging away on the tambourine, he suddenly realised it was his turn to play the harmonica! He almost leaped right into the crowd trying to grab it off the stage equipment, making it back to the mic right on time without missing a single beat. Legendary stuff.
When the intro for "Kingdom of Rust" kicked in—the room went off. Followed closely by the pounding, euphoric rush of "Caught by the River," the energy inside the Barras was nothing short of electric.
Oh and then out came Sub Sub - lets have one hell of a rave to end!!!!!
Doves proved once again why their vast, atmospheric sound belongs right here in Glasgow.
